The Cross Border Championships are organised by Francistown School of Chess represented by Thapelo Molefe and Michalakis School of Chess represented by Pule Mangonyane.  Pule is from Bloemfontein, Thapelo is from Francistown, Botswana.

The tournament is a weekly, online league for academies played on the platform every Firday evening at 19:30. It is structured as a team battle for under 18 players. Besides the two organising academies, the participating teams are Khutsong Chess Club, Nimzowitsch Academy, Kimberley Chess Club, Vosloorus Development Academy from South Africa, Moroka Academy from Botswana and YOFOSO Academy from Zambia.

The event started during lockdown as a way of keeping kids busy and competitive at the same time. It started in May 2020.  The tournament is open to any under 18 academy/club players with junior teams from zone 4.5.  The objective of the tournament is to accommodate under 18 players as it’s the primary role of chess academies to develop chess at grassroots level.

The vision of this tournament is to make it an online league with prizes.  They envisage having a physical tournament where all the participating academies can meet on turns to hold the event annually.

Contact details of the organisers of the tournament is Pule +27814707298 or Thapelo +267 76985188 (WhatsApp) should clubs/academies be interested in participating.
