The members of the Executive Board, in a management meeting, met on a virtual platform on Wednesday, 09 June 2021. A number of resolutions were taken and the key ones are reflected in this media statement.

Moment of Silence
A moment of silence was observed in honour of the two departed members of the Executive Board, the Vice-President, Mr. Alfred Pesa, and the President of South African Schools Chess, Mr. Thomas Lechelele. May their souls rest in peace.

Legal Matters
The Executive Board notes with dismay the Stalingrad delaying legal defence strategy employed by Mr. du Toit and his partners, at the expense of the chess community, having again delayed the resolution of the court appeal. The Executive Board resolved to await the appeal date and will be led by its legal counsel. The chess community, as previously communicated, are hereby reminded that the appeal submitted by Mr. Hendrik Du Toit and his partners, was struck of the court roll. In the meantime, Chess South Africa will remain player-centric and ensure that no player will be affected by any legal matter.

Chess South Africa Events – Awarding of Advertised Bids
The Executive Board have awarded the advertised bids as follow: SA Open, SA Closed and the SA Clubs are awarded to Western Cape Chess and the SA Ladies Open are awarded to Northern Cape Chess. During the events all COVID-19 protocols will be observed in terms of the Chess South Africa COVID-19 Operational Plan as approved by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture for non-contact sport.

International School Federation Chess Championship 2021 – China
The Executive Board awaits the details of the selection criteria used to select learners to represent the Republic from SA Schools Chess. With regards to the Covid-19 pandemic the Executive Board would like to re-assure the chess community that Chess South Africa will work closely with the South African Government to ensure the safety of South African athletes for this competition.

South African Junior Closed 2021 (SAJCCC 2021)
In light of the purported SAJCCC 2021 advertisement and invitation circulating in the Country, the Executive Board wishes to categorically distances Chess South Africa from the invitation as this was not issued by the Federation. Chess South Africa will, under no circumstances, act in contravention of its own Constitution or any national policy approved by the National Council, the highest decision-making body in the Federation, in particular the National Youth Selection Policy. Therefore, the Executive Board herewith would like to caution all its Members, parents and players that their participation in the purported SAJCCC 2021 would be at their own risk. The Executive Board will, under no circumstances, recommend the awarding of South African national colours to SASCOC for players who participated in a selection tournament not held under the auspices of Chess South Africa. It is the view of the Executive Board that this purported event is intended to bring Chess South Africa into disrepute and this will be communicated to SASCOC with immediate effect.

The Executive Board will implement the relevant constitutional prescripts to assist in resolving the impact of current vacancies on the Board. SA Schools Chess have appointed an acting president who will form part of the Board as directed by the Constitution of Chess South Africa. All members of Chess South Africa are hereby reminded that this is an odd-numbered year and that the Federation must convene elections for the relevant office bearer positions stated in the Constitution.

The Executive Board continues to encourage Members to work on their good-standing status and ensure they are in good-standing with the Provincial Sports Confederations. We also encourage players to take part in the upcoming continental
events as sanctioned by the African Chess Confederation of which a brief will follow in this regard.
